What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a lookup that shows who a domain name or IP address is registered to. For domains it shows the registrar, registration and expiry dates, nameservers and the domain status. For IP addresses it returns the organization using the address block, the network name, IP range, country and abuse contact details.
Domain data comes from the registry of the domain extension, and IP data from regional internet registries such as RIPE NCC and ARIN. Besides generic extensions such as .com and .net, .tr domains such as .com.tr can be looked up as well.
How to use
- 1Enter a domain name (for example example.com) or an IP address (IPv4 or IPv6).
- 2Press Query; the result arrives within a few seconds.
- 3Review the registrar, dates, nameservers and protection status; see the raw WHOIS output for full details.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out when a domain expires?
The expiry date in the result shows the last day the domain must be renewed by. A domain that is not renewed by then is suspended and, after a grace period that depends on the extension, becomes available for registration again.
Why is the owner's information hidden?
Because of regulations such as GDPR and KVKK, registrars usually hide the owner's name, address and phone number or replace them with the details of a privacy service. To reach the owner, use the contact options offered by the registrar.
What does clientTransferProhibited mean?
It is a lock that prevents the domain from being transferred to another registrar without permission, and it is enabled by default on most domains. To transfer the domain, first remove the lock in your registrar's panel and get the transfer (EPP/auth) code.
How do I find out who owns an IP address?
When you look up an IP address, you see the organization managing the address block, the network name and the IP range. If you receive attacks or spam from that IP address, you can report it to the abuse email address in the result.
How up to date are WHOIS results?
Lookups are made to the registry in real time. If the same lookup is repeated within an hour, the result comes from server memory; to see a change you just made, look it up again an hour later.
